To enable at-risk children and youth to achieve their personal best, by providing a comprehensive set of educational enhancement services, academic support, counseling, career planning, and cultural enrichment activities in a sustained, focused manner during their preschool through high school years.

WHO WE SERVE

NYA serves nearly 200 low income, at-risk children and youth ages 3-18 and an additional 300 family members.

NYA’s Las Doradas Children’s Center in Venice provides preschool for 36 children ages 3-5 from low-income families

100 at-risk youth ages 6-18 receive comprehensive after-school programming at NYA’s Mar Vista Learning Center

NYA’s satellite sites provide after-school programming for over 60 youth at affordable housing developments in Mid-City, Downtown and South Los Angeles.

99% of NYA’s students are Latino, 1% are African American, 92% do not speak English at home, and all are from low income households

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

Over 100 years of continuous service to the community

80% of NYA students return to the program each year from elementary through high school

80% of NYA parents are active participants in the program – attending parent meetings, participating in events and volunteering

100% of NYA’s high school seniors graduated on time for the fourth year in a row in June 2011

All 2011 graduates are going college – all are among the first generation in their families to attend college

In addition of California State and University of California colleges, NYA’s alumni attend distinguished schools across the nation such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Macalester College, and Mount Holyoke, among others

NYA students have been recognized through the Afterschool Hero Awards (City Scholars Foundation) and Outstanding Youth Volunteer (Assoc. of Fundraising Professionals- Greater Los Angeles Chapter), and the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program – including one winner and two finalists for this prestigious award!
